Trevor E. Carlson, PT, DPT
Trevor started Therapy Kids in 2018 with the goal to help as many families in need of pediatric therapy as we could in our community. He had previously worked for California Children’s Services as Supervising Therapist for the Medical Therapy Unit. This position gave him a unique view of pediatric therapy in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. One thing that became clear was the number of children who needed physical therapy but were unable to receive it. If a child did not qualify for physical therapy through the Medical Therapy Unit there were no physical therapy providers available to them. Trevor left the Medical Therapy Unit in 2018 to start Therapy Kids for these children.
Trevor believes in helping families help their children. Children need lots of practice to develop a skill whether it’s walking, crawling, sitting, lifting their head or throwing a ball. The only way they will get the amount of practice they need is by having practice on a very regular basis. This means parents must know how to facilitate their child’s gross motor development outside of the physical therapy sessions.
Trevor’s passion is to teach parents how to set up a child’s environment to allow them to get the practice they need. He feels most successful when he has helped a parent successfully help their child attain a skill. He believes the physical therapist’s job is to provide the parents and child the skills and knowledge to no longer need ongoing physical therapy.
Outside of Therapy Kids, Trevor enjoys spending time with his family which may grow or shrink depending on how many foster kids he and his wife Carrie currently have. In particular he likes spending time at home in their yard or kitchen with the kids; daddy-daughter dates out and about; or running when he needs some time to think and be alone.
Denise Janowski, PTA
Denise has extensive experience as a physical therapy assistant. In addition to her work in pediatrics, Denise comes from a background of providing physical therapy to adults of all ages. This helps give her a long term perspective when working with children that can sometimes be lacking in the field of pediatrics.
Denise and Trevor started working with each other over a decade ago. When Therapy Kids grew to more clients than Trevor alone could see, Denise was a natural choice for Therapy Kid’s first employee. During their time helping clients together they have become increasingly good at working toward the goals of the client while playing to each of their personal strengths. This means that a session with Denise may look different than a session with Trevor although they are working on the same goals. This leads to improved outcomes for your child.
In addition to her technical skills, Denise is an exceptionally caring person. She invests herself heavily in the clients and families she serves, exemplifying the core values we hold dear at Therapy Kids.
Mai Yang – Office Manager
Mai comes to Therapy Kids with over 20 years experience performing office work in our local medical community. She is friendly and exceptionally gifted at finding room on the schedule for new clients to be seen. Other talents she brings to Therapy Kids are her ability to manage referrals and connect our clients with other services such as orthotics providers. She routinely is able to help facilitate referrals after it seems the families are not able to get connected on their own.
In addition to her work at Therapy Kids, Mai is currently going to massage school.
